I am not a big film buff, and ever since I left Chicago and the early morning discount at the AMC downtown, I am typically disinclined to visit a movie theater. For what it’s worth, here are the top 15 new movies I saw in 2014. Some titles released in late 2013 are on here as well. Oh, and I have seen neither The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies nor Exodus: Gods and Kings. I don’tĀ anticipate thatĀ I will ever see the latter, actually.
- The Grand Budapest Hotel
- Inside Llewyn Davis
- The Immigrant
- Boyhood
- X-Men: Days of Future Past
- Lone Survivor
- Calvary
- Gone Girl
- Birdman
- Interstellar
- Nightcrawler
- Godzilla
- The Lego Movie
- Guardians of the Galaxy
- Magic in the Moonlight

I was very pleased with Marvel Studios this year. Both Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America 2 were step-ups in the quality of film-making from their previous efforts. I’ve been repeatedly told by a good friend to see The Grand Budapest Hotel, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet!
