Today, Advent begins for the Latin Church; tomorrow it will commence for Eastern Catholics and Orthodox following the Julian Calendar. I know I have reposted this before, but for some reason it remains one of the most popular pieces I’ve ever written. So here it is, one more time.

Thank you for reposting this beautiful narrative again, Gabriel. For me, and I would bet for many of the others who have appreciated your story, the real life narrative makes the moral teachings of the piece all the more immediate and compelling. From my brief skimming of Alistair MacIntyre, I seem to recall that he also emphasizes the importance of narrative in ethical discussion, and even in our own legal profession, the CLEs that keep one’s interest the longest are those with stories of real people illustrating the points.
